“Is a person the product of their environment, or does a person shape their environment?”
This question is at the heart of Survivor’s Remorse: The Donnie Fletcher Story.
As a former NFL player who grew up in inner-city Cleveland and graduated from Boston College in 2012, Fletcher understands firsthand how one’s environment can shape a person.
He also understands the power of perseverance and personal choice. After retiring from the NFL in 2016, Fletcher moved to New York City and built a successful career in corporate sales.
His story began under very different circumstances. Raised by two drug-addicted parents, Fletcher spent eight years in foster care, became involved with gangs as a pre-teen, and experienced homelessness in his early teens.
Despite these challenges, Fletcher earned a college degree and reached the NFL. Along the way, he lost many friends and family members and struggled with one question: Why did I survive when they did not?
Survivor’s Remorse is a story of resilience, determination and overcoming adversity. It explores the challenges facing young Black men growing up in inner-city America and the decisions that can shape their futures.
